Katrina Relief Mission Trip to Mississippi
Thursday, January 12 - 16
Informational Flyer
We will be traveling to Mississippi to help with the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and hopefully provide some hope in the midst of all the despair. As a church, Athens First United Methodist has agreed to send groups to the devastated Gulf Coast over the next 24 months to assist with relief efforts through UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief. As a group within the church, we are going to sponsor a trip to the Gulf Coast with approximately ten to twelve volunteers to assist with the relief efforts. The trip will take place during Martin Luther King Weekend, leaving after school/work on Thursday, January 12 and returning on the evening of Monday, January 16. We will travel to the Gulf Port, Mississippi as a group in a church van.

Costa Rica Mission Trip
December 28 - January 4
March 11-18
June/July
Informational Brochure

We will be traveling to El Centro Rural Metodista, a small farm located just outside of Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica where we will stay with our host missionaries, with Rev. Marion & Mary Woods. The primary job is to live the love of Jesus Christ through our conduct with all we meet along the way and through the building houses for the people of El Mirador, a village of Nicaraguan refugees. Their humble houses are simple and do not require a special knowledge of construction. What is required is a willingness to work, a willingness to follow instructions, and a willingness to be cooperative with team members and the local leadership.

St. James Homeless Shelter
Winter 2005
St. James UMC is currently housing their homeless shelter at Walk on Water Ministries which is located on Hancock St. about a block west of AFUMC. At this time, everyone sleeps in one large room on mats and because of the space limitations, they only house 14 persons a night. Each night of the week at around 8:00 pm, except for Sundays and Tuesdays, a small group of individuals bring and serve food for the 14 overnight guests. Since there is no facilities for cooking at the location, the food must be prepared beforehand and then warmed up on hot plates after arriving. The current standard is to simply bring in one or two large dishes, serve the food, and be out by 9:00 pm. If anyone is interested in helping with this ministry, please let us know and we will contact Mr. and Mrs. Anderson to schedule a night for us to serve. Due to space limitations, we could only bring 2 or 3 people at a time.

Other Support
In addition to being a team member, financial assistance is always helpful, including the sponsorship of a team member. We also occasionally need individuals to volunteer driving the church bus with the team members. Prayer support is also needed. If you are interested in helping in this important way, please contact Jon or Justin.
