Alternative Night Out

The College/Grad School Ministry will have an Alternative Night Out at the church from 7pm-12am. Everyone will bring their favorite food to share followed by lots of fun in the church’s game room, gym & movie room. It will be a great time to get to know one another and have some fun at the same time. Plus, you’ll get to play pool, foosball, air hockey, ping pong, and of course volleyball! Trust me; it’ll be a good time! Come to the back door of the gymnasium up the stairs at the corner of Washington and Hull Street (across from the Morton Theater).

UGA v. Alabama Football Tailgate
Saturday, September 22 @ 3:00pm - 8:00pm
The College/Grad School Ministry will have a UGA v. Alabama tailgate at Jon & Julia's house. Everyone will bring their favorite tailgate food to share and then we'll have lots of fun watching the Bulldogs run all over the Alabama Roll Tide. It will be a great time to watch some football, play some games and fellowship with some good church friends. Directions will be sent out on the e-mail group. Interfaith Hospitality Network Setup Crew
Sunday, October 21 @ 2:00pm
We will help prepare the church to host the Interfaith Hospitality guests by moving their stuff upstairs and setting up their bedrooms. Then, we'll prepare dinner for our guests and spend the night with them in the Children's Sunday School wing. In the morning, we'll use the van to deliver the children to school and the parents to work or the day center.

Sparrow's Nest Christmas Toy Giveaway
Saturday, December 8
Help volunteer with the Sparrow's Nest Mission Church as they provide assistance to needy families with their Christmas toy giveaway. Last year, over 600 families and 1800 children were helped through this amazing program. To accomplish that incredible task, it took over 200 volunteers and countless hours.

AFUMC Community Christmas Meal

On December 23, after the 11am worship service, we gather the cooks of the church and serve the hungry from our community a hearty Christmas meal. Every year, many in our area look forward to this Christmas feast! Many servants from our church are needed for set up, serving and clean up. Please join us for this heartwarming Christmas tradition.

Informational Brochure
We will be traveling to El Centro Rural Metodista, a small farm located just outside of Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica where we will stay with our host missionaries, with Rev. Marion & Mary Woods. The primary job is to live the love of Jesus Christ through our conduct with all we meet along the way and through the building houses for the people of El Mirador, a village of Nicaraguan refugees. Their humble houses are simple and do not require a special knowledge of construction. What is required is a willingness to work, a willingness to follow instructions, and a willingness to be cooperative with team members and the local leadership.

Bowl a Strike for Christ
Friday, January 26 @ 6:30pm - 10:00pm
We’ll meet at La Parrilla for dinner. (The church will even pick up the tab for all of the chips!)Then, after we get filled up with Mexican, we’ll try our best to bowl some strikes. We have two lanes reserved from 8:00pm until 10:00pm at King Pin Bowling off Prince Ave and Jefferson Road. The lanes and shoes will be provided by the church. Anyone of college, graduate or young career age is invited, so please bring your friends. (RSVPs for dinner are requested so we can make reservations) La Parrilla is located off Prince Avenue/Jeferson Road just past the bypass. From downtown, take Prince Avenue towards Jefferson. After the going over the bypass, take a left at the light and La Parrilla is in the far corner of the shopping center.

CASA Christmas Party

Our Church, Athens First United Methodist Church, hosts a very special night for foster children so Santa can come and provide free gifts. Volunteers from our church help with the kitchen duties, playing games, and act as Santa's very own helpers! We will be helping to welcome these children to our church and may their night extra special.

Volunteers from our church create a carnival atmosphere in the gym with plenty of activities, fun and games! We will be going to Pinewood Estates North on Hwy 29 and remove debris/old furniture for transportation to the dump. A few pick up trucks are in desperate need. We will meet at the church and go to Pinewoods as a group.

The College/Grad School Ministry along with AFUMC Youth will have a mixer at the church from 7pm-10pm for the youth and until 12:30am for the others. Snacks and appetizers will be provided as well as ice breakers, games, and team competitions! Come and bring a friend...it is sure to be a blast! It will be a great time to get to fellowship with one another and have some fun at the same time.

Make A Change - Service Day
Saturday, March 4
One of the members of the group, Justin, is helping start a men's recovery home. It will be suited to assist men struggling with addiction or just trying to make a transition back into society (i.e. just out of prison, off the street). At the recovery home, they will come and live in a stable Christian environment and go through a structured program to help get them back on their feet. Currently there are several places like this in Athens (Hope House, Palm House, Jubilee House) but some of these do not provide a very stable environment and most are full and have waiting lists.

Book Club
Friday, January 20
We met for our inaugural book club meeting and shared dinner at Justin's House. We discussed and voted for the two books we would be reading this month. Afterwards, we went as a group to watch the premiere showing of End of the Spear. It was an awesome movie and we would all recommend that others go watch it.

Katrina Relief Mission Trip to Mississippi

We will be traveling to Louisiana to help with the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and hopefully provide some hope in the midst of all the despair. As a church, Athens First United Methodist has agreed to send groups to the devastated Gulf Coast over the next 24 months to assist with relief efforts through UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief. As a group within the church, we are taking fifteen volunteers to assist with the relief efforts. The trip will take place during Martin Luther King Weekend, leaving after school/work on Thursday, January 12 and returning on the evening of Monday, January 16. We will travel as a group in a church van.

Unicoi Camping Trip
Friday, November 4-5
We went camping at Unicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia. With flashlights in hand, we attempted to master the North Georgia Corn Maze and then roasted marshmallows on the campfire. On Saturday we hiked to Anna Ruby Falls and then had a picnic lunch, followed by some put-put golf in the historic town of Helen.

Interfaith Hospitality Dinner / Worship
Tuesday, October 25
We hosted the Interfaith Hospitality guests at our church on Tuesday night and prepared a Mexican buffet with everything from fajitas, taco salads to Tres Leches cake. We followed that with a short worship service and had the children help lead the praise music.
